My thoughts about this book...this is one of the best books I have ever read. Timely, thought provoking. It draws you in and keeps the action moving. The characters are believable and the problems they face are real. .. even to how to keep a baby in diapers in a world gone wrong.Product details

Despite the dystopian setting this story is a little too sweet for me, and I found this element jarring with the imminent thread of nihilism permeating the book.
The story is intriguing, I was most gripped by the beginning and again towards end when the pace of the book picks up even faster.
In truth the middle section left me a little less enthused, so I didn't feel an urgency to read on, however once I picked it up again I was quickly emersed and consequently came across a couple of plot twists that I hadn't seen coming, so extra kudos for that. The gripping conclusion rocked to a slightly abrupt but satisfactory ending. I would have appreciated an epilogue.
'Shelter Me' is the first book of Megan Reddaway’s Heven series, so there's more to follow anyway. Whilst I would like to know more about Leo and Cole, frankly it isn't very high on my agenda.
The writing is good, the characters are affable, and I think that is potentially where my issue lies.
I find it difficult to suspend belief sufficiently at the implausability of Leo having spent most of his life institutionalised and little more than a science experiment at the (top secret) Facility, and yet he seems to have escaped (literally) with very little emotional damage.
Indeed, Leo comes across as fairly ordinary and quite well adjusted whilst coping with his exceptional empath abilities and taking on a fathering role for his cloned baby brother Jae.
It seems unlikely to me that Leo could be quite so affable and sweet, particularly as his abilities were honed to witness and report on information gathered through torture at the Facility. I would have anticipated a few character flaws at the very least - not trusting ingénu.
Similarly, Leo's love interest Cole pefers to live off grid and to be self reliant, leading a fairly introverted lifestyle; and yet he quite speedily finds himself caring deeply about Leo and baby Jae. Again, this man has no discernable character flaws either. I think personally I like my leads to have some internal as well as external struggles.
Grumbles aside, I liked the fact that the MC came from an American Asian background. I also enjoyed the contrasts that Leo experiences between his imagined life on the run, gleaned through movies watched during incarceration at the Facility, and his real life experiences.
Leo is determined to protect Jae from life at the Facility at all costs, when he sees a chance to flee he takes it, fearing that Jane's experience will be even bleaker than his own under the control of the Director.
Having escaped Leo is in way over his head, but he's not giving up without a fight. I think it's their shared resilience that begins to draw Leo and Cole closer together following their chance meeting.
Whilst the romance is fairly slow burn, as their intimacy grows, moments of comedy also ensue when Cole tries to keep his thoughts about his growing attraction to Leo pure enough in front of baby Jae, who shares Leo's empathic abilities. The connection between all three of them is really very charming.
All in all, I enjoyed the book it is an interesting read. I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys a dystopian tale with a hint of romance..
It is little too light about the repercussions of an institutionalised lifestyle for me to be completely convinced and blown away by it. I love the concept however, although the characters would need to be a little rougher around the edges for me to be truly invested in the rest of the series. Luckily 'Shelter Me' can be read as a standalone novel.

Leo Park is a nineteen year old empath who has been kept in a research facility since he was six years old. Cole Millard lives by his own rules, living off the land by his cabin on family land since he considers himself anti-establishment. When Leo gets the idea to try and leave the facility with his baby brother, he does not get far before he runs into Cole in the woods, changing the direction of all their plans!
The story is told from Leo and Cole’s alternating point of view.
This story is set in a dystopian future where there is no longer a United States and Canada, but a North American Union with a president overseeing all of it. Leo’s empath abilities may have been an indirect result of an FNK exposure, which seems to be the biggest threat to mankind in this story, and it would be interesting in future stories if more of that was explained. For Leo, his ability is why he has been in a research facility since he was six, receiving a very controlled education with his only exposure to the outside world being old movies, which are chosen for him as well. However, he still thinks on his own and asks questions, but he is quite naïve.
For Cole, his parents have passed away, but he chose to keep a cabin on their land in Oregon, although other parts were sold off to other owners since his sister has a husband and children in Seattle. He is not a huge fan of all the technology that allows anyone in any kind of power to track you, his only concession being his bank account since the world is now a cashfree environment, everything must be paid for electronically.
So, you have a nineteen year old who has lived a sheltered life and a twenty five year old who has seen too much in some ways! However, because Cole is anti establishment, he is willing to grant Leo the benefit of the doubt with his story, which does lead to an interesting dynamic as Leo cannot depend entirely on his abilities to know how to interact with someone who is without an agenda towards him! I did enjoy that dynamic and how the two young men came to rely on each other and care about each other, as well as how they learned to care for Jae.
It was an enjoyable story, particularly if you like the dystopian story trope and it will be interesting to see where the series goes, if there will be more details about this new world they are in and how Leo and Cole figure into it or if new characters will be brought in. The story was more about their relationship and escape, so there are only a couple of sex scenes and they are not overly graphic. If you like this brand of fiction, you likely will enjoy this story.
I loved this story. Great characters. Kept my interest and I didn't want to put the book down. Can't wait for part 2
