Ever so often a book comes along that is profound in the way it makes the reader feel. After reading Terri Cabral's Tale of Thisbe, An Extraordinary Cat, I felt happy. It is a sweet tale, but watch out; it's much more.We meet Thisbe as a kitten slowly opening her eyes. Cuddled next to her are three more kittens, and standing over her is Mama, an orange-colored cat that names her Precious.
The real world clomps in through the door screaming about the mess that Pumpkin, Thisbe's mama, made of his closet. Thisbe describes the person as " . . . large, tall creature with long, wild, dark hair looming over us." The creature finds his favorite shirt ruined, so Mama moves the new family deeper into the closet as the creature runs out screaming for his roommate Stan.
Thus begins Thisbe's tale, which is, in fact, a memoir.
Following the shock of the creature, the tiny clowder meets Stan, a very kind man who names each of them. An opera buff, he names Thisbe from the opera Cinderella.
The creature returns and his name is Joe. They escape the closet and run from Joe, but Stan rescues them and takes them to his room where they live until the day comes when they are given away.
After a long and painful goodbye to Mama, Ana, an actor, adopts Thisbe. Fascinated by and curious about everything our sweet kitten finds joy in meeting other humans and animals of all sizes, shapes and species. She meets Thomas, a cat who has ". . . beautiful green eyes."
"He's sooooo cute!" Thisbe coos.
Later,she meets Fester, a cat that gets a little too close, and when left alone in Ana's apartment, she befriends a flight of pigeons that perch on Ana's windowsill. And Toto, a dog that lives upstairs, becomes her friend, too. All become her friends because the most endearing quality she has is uncompromising friendship and love for those friends. As the tale progresses, we experience how accepting Thisbe and kind she is with other animals.
That is, perhaps, what the book is about: abiding friendship and acceptance. Although Thisbe and all the other animals portrayed can talk and think and reason, we know they are archetypes of human beings. Each critter is unique: good, bad, happy, disgruntled, threatening-we, in fact, are the subjects of this small book, filled with more than just a sweet tale about a sweet cat and her coming of age.
Cabral created a world from a cat's point of view, and that view was not what we might think a cat's view would be. It's important to remember cats are born killers. With retractable claws that can rip and tear like small scalpels, teeth like needles, eyes that can pierce the dark and a flat wedge-shaped head that can slither through grass like a snake, a cat is formidable. Even though she is a cat and has all the necessary weapons, Thisbe is not a killer. She is just the opposite; she could not hurt anything.
So, for me she was the ideal I want to find in all people. We, too, are born killers. Though not as equipped as cats, we nonetheless are able to build weapons and wreak havoc on our own kind and our fellow creatures with which we share this planet.
Thisbe, then, for me is ideal, and I applaud Cabral for introducing me to her. This book is deceptive. The impression one may get from a shallow reading is that it is a nice little book but not great literature. To me it is not necessarily great literature, and it need not be because it speaks eloquently some truths we find only in our myths.

This book is excellent for anyone who loves animals, and not just cats. It's engaging and entertaining, and really draws you into the world of this wonderful cat named Thisbe. The author based her story on a real-life cat whose name was Thisbe, but this story takes you further into a new and different scenario. I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants or needs an escape from the high pressure of today's complicated world. It really is an extraordinary book about an extraordinary cat, by an extraordinary author.
Thisbe is truly an extraordinary cat! Terri Cabral tells a wonderful story of a tiny kitten's life and all of the creatures - both human and animal - she meets along the way. As the proud owner (or maybe ownee is the better term for it - haha) of two cats, I often wonder about what's going on in their minds. Told from Thisbe's point of view regarding her own observations of the world, The Tale of Thisbe an Extraordinary Cat... answers the questions I've always had. I mean, I know it's fiction, but it was interesting to see the world from a cat's perspective and easy for me to see Thisbe's experiences as being the same as my own cats. It's a fun and heartwarming read and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I would highly recommend this book to any animal lover.

Terri Cabral entices you into Thisbe's world, and as a result, by the end of the book, Thisbe has captured a place within your own!
Thisbe had an adventure filled life, and then dictated a memoir (well, I assume she told this story to the author - who would presume to put words into the mouth of such a clearly superior cat?) that readers of all ages can enjoy. Check out Thisbe's life - you won't be disappointed!
Excellent book for young and old alike!! Read it to small children and there are life lessons to teach. Thisbe, although a cat, has many experiences not unlike a human. She experiences friendship, loses of friends and family through moving or death and many joys and adventures. I found the book touching, funny and a joy to read.
